Anything but silent: First cafe in Croatia with D/deaf staff
A story from Total Croatia News looks at a successful social entrepreneurship project.
The article outlines that there are 2 deaf and 2 hearing waiters working in the 'Silent Caffe' in Zagreb. One of the waiters has had a Cochlear Implant since he was six years old. Management try to make the bar as inclusive as possible. for staff and customers. They use different communication strategies such as incorporating sign language. They also have tablets for customers to place orders.
There is a legal requirement to employ disabled people in Croatia but a lot of employers are not aware of this. A visitor to the cafe is quoted by reporters that they really make for a prejudiced society if people regard a cafe like Silent as outstanding or weird instead of something normal and mundane.
